Coach Alex Atkinson grew up in England before moving to Loudoun County and attending Briar Woods High School. After high school, he served as a U.S. Marine and began college at Virginia Commonwealth University. One day while going to the gym at VCU, he ran into the crew team who then recruited him to come row in Spring of 2017. Alex was drawn to the competitiveness and comradery of the sport. While he was with the VCU team, he used his skills in Woodworking and welding to create annual trophies that the team gives out every year and an Alumni board. If you were to visit the boathouse down in Richmond you would find both his and Coach Kate’s names on the Alumni board.
In his free time he enjoys hanging out with his family and playing computer games with his friends. He has 2 dogs, Maverick and Dioji, and is married to the fantastic Coach Kate. He’s a big Chicago fan and wears Cubs hats almost exclusively.
Since leaving college, Alex has continued his love rowing by coaching in Loudoun County. He has really enjoyed helping athletes learn and find their own love of the sport.
